Suspend strike, union urges ASUU

The Students’ Union President of Abia State University(ABSU), Comr. John Nwakama has appealed to the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU) in the institution to suspend its industrial action.

He said: “We are not ignorant of the fact that lecturers are still owed salaries for months, but we humbly appeal that you consider us as we don’t want to miss a whole year out of school because the impact is much. Students have extra year, delay in seniority for Law students and delay in procession for students to attend NYSC, just to mention but a few.”

What alternatives to ASUU’s incessant strike

In March 24, 2020, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) embarked on an indefinite strike over the failure of the Federal Government to keep to the 2019 Memorandum of action between them.

Apart from that, the union and the government have also been at loggerheads over the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS).

The Federal Government’s insistence on the implementation of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) in the payment of university lecturers’ salaries and allowances does not go well with the union who insists it would erode university autonomy.ASUU proposed a home-grown payment platform, the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) which they believe, guarantees autonomy of universities. The union is waiting for the government to conduct an integrity test on UTAS.

ASUU, Ngige, Nwajiuba and others

This is not a time to play coy or quibble as the government of Muhammadu Buhari unleashes its arsenal on the university system in Nigeria. We have gone through this road before with dire consequences for the country. The current dog fight between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the federal government over the latter’s attempt to scoff at a genuine agreement between it and the former is a continuation of the war the ruling class has waged on the university system in particular and the education sector in general over the years. Successive Nigerian governments have not respected agreements with ASUU and in fact, during the dictatorship of Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, his Education Secretary (Minister), Ben Nwabueze (SAN) opined that the agreement the government reached with ASUU was one of “imperfect obligation”, meaning that the agreement was not binding on the government as it did not have the force of law.
