Recently, details has spread around the globe about the future of world football, precisely Europe.
It has been reported that 12 major football clubs in Europe, had come together outside the European football body, UEFA and FIFA principles to start a different competition that would be known as the “European Super League”.
This Super League as stated, would comprise 20 major football clubs in the world, playing just like the domestic league games.
Already, twelve European teams, namely; English big six (Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur), Spanish sides (Barcelona, Real Madrid and Athletico Madrid), Italian sides (Juventus, Inter Milan and A C Milan) have formed the founding teams, and waiting for more three to make the founding teams fifteen in number.
The decision has sparked a lot of controversy on social media, as football fans have criticized and appraised the new development.
Earlier in a tweet made by Fabrizio Romano, a skysport journalist on Twitter, said, United European Football Association, UEFA are against the new development which is seen as a breach to the association’s constitution and moreover, a plot to rival UEFA Competitions-Champions league and Europa league- and warned that any club that joins will be banned from participating in the domestic league games and other UEFA competitions, and the players also might be banned from playing international competitions like the World cup.
The English Premier league in a written statement condemned the European Super League proposal, noting that they’ll do everything possible in their power and in collaboration with other English football associations to disallow such proposal.
Also, there is a report that club presidents involved in the meeting and formation of the Super league have been sacked and their contracts ripped off.
If the Super League happens to succeed and begin immediately it has been slated to begin, how would it look like?
According to Romano, The competition has been invented as a means to make football more fun and interesting as bigger teams will play each other on occasions without having to wait long until the champions league and europa.
President of Real Madrid, Fiorentino Perez who is one of the founding presidents in a tweet, wrote: “we will help football at every level and take it to its rightful place in the world. Football is the only global sport and our responsibility as big clubs is to respond to their desires”.
Andrea Agnelli, also one of the founding Presidents wrote on twitter, saying, “we have come together in this critical moment (covid 19)… giving fans and amateur players a regular flow of headline fixtures that will feed their passion for the game while providing them with engaging role models”.
Joel Glazer while speaking with Mulive, according to united report said, “By bringing together the world’s greatest clubs and players to play each other, the Super League will open a new chapter for European football, ensuring world-class competition and facilities and increased financial support, for the wider football pyramid.”
Many who criticized the development said it is commercially inclined, and that the love of money is the root of the invention.
