What Do You know About Brain Tumors? If You Notice Any of These Signs Seek Medical Attention

Dr. Adedayo Joseph, one of the oncologists at Lagos University Teaching Hospital Cancer Centre had said that not all brain tumors lead to immediate death.

According to his teaching, he said that brain tumors can be arrested and cured in their early days of development.

Brain tumor

A brain tumor is a mass or growth of abnormal cells in your brain. Some brain tumors are noncancerous (benign) while some are cancerous (malignant).
As gathered, during an interview with newsmen, Dr. Adedayo Joseph said that “People think that brain tumor means that people can’t survive but brain tumors are completely survivable depending on the kind of tumor.

“Some tumors are curable and some are benign growth because the brain is such a confined space and anything going on there can cause a lot of problems.

She said that as people are taking note of it, nothing should stop them from diagnosing themselves in the hospital.

“The incidence is increasing but not necessarily because the rate has increased but possibly because we have more ability to diagnose accurately,” she said.

Speaking about the ages that can be affected, Dr. Joseph said that children are most likely to develop theirs in the lower part of the brain while adults are vulnerable to develop theirs in the upper part of the brain.
She highlighted some of the possible symptoms of brain tumors.

“The signs and symptoms of brain tumors depend on the location but headaches are a common symptom of a brain tumor. You may experience difficulty in walking, vomiting.
Some people have instability that looks like stroke, weakness, dizziness, difficulty in speaking, difficulty understanding speech, hormonal symptoms especially in children,” she said.

The oncologist suggested that the best treatment one can ever receive in a case of brain tumor development is to go for surgery. This is for the health practitioners to remove the brain tumor as much as possible from the body.

“When surgery is either not an option, or there is no way to remove the entire tumor or it’s a kind of tumor that sends metastases to the Central Nervous System, you can have additional radiation therapy and sometimes, chemotherapy.
Radiation is a very important part of treating brain tumours,” Joseph said.
