One of Lionel Messi’s new PSG team-mates has suggested that Cristiano Ronaldo would favour a move to PSG.

Angel Di Maria has joked that Cristiano Ronaldo wants to join Paris Saint-Germain following the sensational arrival of legendary forward Lionel Messi.

The midfielder has also added fuel to the long-running debate over which player is better by siding with his new team-mate, in a subtle dig at former Real Madrid colleague Ronaldo.

Messi joined the Ligue 1 side last week following a lengthy contract saga with Barcelona, where a 21-year spell had made him a club icon.

The 34-year-old had technically become a free agent after his previous deal expired at the end of June.

Barca are unable to register new signings and were therefore unable to tie down Messi to a new contract.

The La Liga club announced news of Messi’s departure in a brief statement which placed blame on the Spanish football authorities’ player registration rules.

Messi has since become the latest addition to PSG’s star-studded line-up.

The forward will play alongside Argentina team-mate Di Maria, who has suggested that Messi’s rival Ronaldo is jealous of their team and wants to join.

“For me, it is very easy to play with him [with Messi]. If you run, he gives the ball to your feet,” Di Maria, who played with Ronaldo at Real, told Tyc Sports.

“There are no excuses for anything. I have an excellent relationship with him on and off the pitch. It is easy to realise what you want.

“Cristiano must want to k**l himself for not being here.

“The quality and quantity of players that PSG has now is something unique. Not many times it happens in clubs and the great players always want to be with the best.

“Cristiano surely wants to be, but they bought Messi and luckily much better.”

The Parisians have a lengthening history of failing to win the Champions League, despite the huge amounts of money that they shell out on big-name signings.

They lost the 2020 final to Bayern Munich and were beaten by Manchester City in the semi-final last term.

Di Maria was sent off in a disappointing 2-0 second leg loss at the Etihad Stadium.

PSG were also surprisingly beaten to the Ligue 1 title for just the second time in seven years in 2020-21, as Lille finished at the summit of the division.

Di Maria has said that expectation to win trophies has increased since Messi’s arrival.

“We always have the obligation to win the Champions League and now with the arrival of Messi we have to do whatever it takes,” he continued.

Boss Mauricio Pochettino has overseen a big summer overhaul of his squad, with Messi as the face of the revamp.

Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and midfielder Gini Wijnaldum have been signed on free transfers after their contracts expired at AC Milan and Liverpool, respectively.

Wing-back Achraf Hakimi has also joined in a £54million move from Inter Milan.
