Jadon Sancho has pulled out of the England squad for the remaining World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Poland after picking up a knock.
The Manchester United forward missed the 4-0 win over Hungary and the Football Association has now confirmed he will now return to his club.
“Following further assessment, the 21-year-old has returned to his club and is expected to recover in time for Manchester United’s fixture with Newcastle United on Saturday 11 September,” a statement said.
United have already been boosted by the early arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo back from international duty.
The Portuguese is suspended for his country’s next two fixtures after picking up a booking for taking his shirt in the 2-1 win over the Republic of Ireland.
As for England, Sancho is likely to be the only notable absentee – though Gareth Southgate could choose to experiment against Andorra at Wembley.
The Three Lions are in a comfortable position in Group I, five points clear of nearest rivals Poland.
That could present opportunities for the likes of Leeds striker Patrick Bamford and United’s Jesse Lingard, who came on as a substitute against Hungary in Budapest.
“It’s a special moment for him and for his family,” Southgate said of Bamford. “You always think about people that have helped you on that journey.
“We want him to do what he does every week with his club. He has settled in really well with the group, he hasn’t had a huge amount of time to be able to train with us yet but I think he’s got a really clear picture of how we like to play.
“We just want him to go and enjoy his football. It’s an opportunity and he shouldn’t put any more pressure on himself than that. We know what he’s capable of and we’re looking forward to seeing him play.”
Harry Maguire will be rested as Southgate confirmed Conor Coady would start, while Jordan Henderson is likely to come in for Declan Rice, who risks missing the Poland match if he is booked.
Southgate will be keen too to see more of Jude Bellingham, who was brought on during Wednesday night’s win.
England’s predicted XI: Pickford; Alexander-Arnold, Stones, Coady, Trippier; Henderson, Bellingham; Saka, Mount, Lingard; Bamford
