Done Deals

The summer transfer window was a busy one for Premier League clubs, with the 20 clubs spending a combined £1.1bn on new recruits for the 2021-22 season.

Manchester United have completed the most sensational piece of business, re-signing Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus, 12 years after he left the club to join Real Madrid. Ronaldo will link up with former Real teammate Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho at Old Trafford.

Manchester City were credited with an interest in Ronaldo after missing out on their top striker target Harry Kane who will remain at Spurs. City have completed the most expensive signing of the window nonetheless, acquiring Jack Grealish in a £100m deal from Aston Villa.

Chelsea have also splashed the cash, bringing Romelu Lukaku back to the club seven years after allowing him to join Everton. Lukaku signed for a club-record £97.5m deal from Inter with whom he won the Serie A title last season.

Liverpool’s lack of depth in defence almost cost them a Champions League place last campaign and Jurgen Klopp has moved quickly to bolster his options in that area as a result by signing France U21 captain Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig in a deal worth £36m.

As well as retaining Kane’s services and tying Son Heung-min down to a new long-term contract, Spurs brought in five new faces, including Copa America winning Argentine centre back Cristian Romero from Atalanta. The club also has high hopes for new right back Emerson Royal, who joined from Barcelona on deadline day.

Leicester City, the Premier League kings of the transfer market in recent years, got big deals done quickly with Zambian forward Patson Daka joining from Red Bull Salzburg and French midfielder Boubakary Soumare following from Ligue 1 champions Lille. The Foxes also raided Southampton’s backline to recruit Ryan Bertrand and Jannik Vestergaard.
