According to a report by The Nation, about 6,300kg (6.3tonnes) of recyclable plastics (over 300,000 PET bottles) have been mopped up in 15 communities in Lagos and Ife, Osun State.

The Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance (FBRA) carried out the project on September 18, 2021 in commemoration of the annual World Clean-Up Day.

FBRA is the industry-coalition Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) for enhancing the collection and recovery of post-consumer packaging material in the food and beverage sector.

This year’s activities involved the cleanup of Ilashe/Ibeshe beachfront, Agbowo, Lagos; Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo and Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ife; and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camp in Ibadan.

The clean-up was in partnership with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA); Lagos State Waterways (LASWA), Green Janitors Sustainable Initiative, Geocycle and Recycledge to create awareness and promote recycling in the various communities impacted.

Executive Secretary of the Alliance, Onaghise Agharese, explained that the partnership was part of FBRA’s role of implementing the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), adding that the pet bottles would have been disposed of in the dumpsite, drainage or waterways but were recovered and recycled for productive use.
