UNIABUJA Safer After Kidnap Incident – VC
VC has said that UNIABUJA is safer after kidnap incident.
The Nation reports that one year after the kidnap of some staff of University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) and their families, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, said the school has put measures in place to ensure such incident never happens again.
Na’Allah, who spoke at an event: Lecturers Support Project, organised by Love and Light UniAbuja Association in United States, said the incident left the security architecture better than before.
“Since that day, our institution has not been the same, our security is now No. 1 and we are keeping safe,” Na’Allah said.
On November 2, 2021, armed men invaded the university staff quarters, kidnapping several lecturers with some relatives. They were released on November 8 after six days with their abductors.
Recalling the incident, the VC said he hoped the incident would not repeat itself.
“I was sleeping when I got the call at 12:30 am. Till today, things have not been the same. What happened was intentional to break us, but we fought back, those taken were returned, God said no, take them back and we didn’t pay ransom,” he said.
One year after the incident and following the eight months strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the association decided to support some of the survivors and other lecturers.
Its representative, Tracy Kanu-Ejim, said it would assist lecturers who endured eight months of the strike and help the kidnap survivors.
Kanu-Ejim said the association connects past students and helps society through charity.
Fifty-four lecturers got N50,000 each.
