Akwa Ibom State governor-elect, Umo Eno has said that police officers should be recognised for their sacrifices.
DAILY POST reports that the Akwa Ibom State governor-elect, Umo Eno said police officers as well as other security operatives in the country ought to be given recognition and preferences following the level of services they render to the country.
He added that a lot of security officers have paid the supreme prize to keep the country safe, yet their sacrifices have not been appreciated.
Eno who spoke at the state police command headquarters, Ikot Akpanabia on Friday during the foundation laying of the Command’s fitness centre said police needed a place to relax after carrying out their constitutional duty of protecting and securing the lives and property of the people.
“A lot of our security people have paid the supreme prize to keep our country safe. We should up our ante in the aspect of giving them recognition, in some other climes anywhere a police officer in uniform appears, he would be given a lot of recognition and preferences but it’s not applicable here.
“Those of us who think that police are not doing badly in terms of providing security will understand their sacrifices when they attempt to go on strike even for two hours.
Earlier, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olatoye Durosinmi said he has worked to give the police headquarters a face-lift since his assumption of office ten months ago.
Durosinmi stated that the fitness centre was conceived to enable the always busy personnel of the police force to keep fit as they serve the people, noting that the construction of the fitness centre was not out of place.
He said in other parts of the world, a command headquarters should have a fitness centre as well as underground firing where officers can test their capacity in firearms use.
