Five Arrested For Fraudulent Sim Card Registration

Five suspects have reportedly been arrested by the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, for alleged fraudulent sales and registration of Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards in Wuse area of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

This was disclosed by the Director of Public Affairs of NCC, Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde on Thursday in Abuja.

According to Ikechukwu, the operation was jointly carried out by The Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement Department of the commission with Department of State Services, DSS and Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC, led by Mr Salisu Abdu, NCC’s Head of Department.

Ikechukwu and Abdu noted that the arrest was meant to rid the industry of criminal activities of fraudulent SIM card registrations, noting also that it is a punishable offense to pre-register SIM cards while warning those who were involved in the unlawful act to stop.

Abdu also noted that, the Federal Government had lifted the ban on sale of new SIM cards, and that proper registration and linking them with National Identity Number, NIN, before activation had become a prior necessity.
